In 2021, HYA’s co-founder J. Meejin Yoon was elected to be a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, an honorary award given to leading artists, architects, writers and musicians with notable achievements. The New Member Exhibition at the Academy celebrates Meejin’s membership and offers a different perspective on Meejin’s work and Höweler+Yoon studio’s select built projects.
Using representations of architecture—digital models and photographs—the two installations Waxing & Waning and Tool Paths deploy block printing and relief carving techniques to collapse space and form into layered two dimensions. The arrayed vignettes not only capture moments of individual projects but of the design process that is central to producing them. In isolating form and views, these two series reveal a new perspective into the practice and process behind some of Yoon and Höweler + Yoon’s built work. Two series proffer a different approach to the practice and process.
