Located in Hainan Province of Southern China, the Solar Veil proposes an architecturally expressive residential envelope design calibrated to the subtropical local climate. All units in this 9-story building benefit from outdoor balconies that extend living spaces and create solar shading. The saw-toothed slab edge varies, forming multistory bay window projections that appear to peel open and create the impression of a rippling facade. Framing uninhibited views away from the neighboring buildings, the bay windows offer residents of each unit a generous shaded outdoor space.
The vertical louvers are made with custom profile aluminum extrusion with microserration. Catered for each solar orientation of the building, louvers are spaced at a varying cadence to allow for maximum view out while reducing direct sun exposure during hot months.
Höweler+Yoon designed the masterplan of the district including 10 residential buildings, a hotel, and retail pavilions, and designed four residential buildings and their amenity podiums within the masterplan.
